Hypatia
Neoplatonist philosopher and mathematician of Alexandria, c. 360-415
No work of Hypatia's has come down to us under her name; the titles come from the Byzantine lexicon known as the Suda and from her father, Theon of Alexandria. She was killed by a mob of Christians in 415.
Works
- Astronomical Canon. Lost; perhaps an edition of Ptolemy's Handy Tables.
- Commentary on the Arithmetica of Diophantus. Lost, except perhaps in glosses on the text of Diophantus.
- Commentary on the Conics of Apollonius. Lost.
- Revision of Ptolemy's Almagest. At least of Book III, according to the title of Theon's commentary on that book; some read it as saying that she revised the commentary itself.
